Several Internet based companies around the world are shutting down or otherwise censoring their websites to protest two new legislative bills: SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, and PIPA, the Protect Intellectual Property Act. This list includes Internet giants such as Google, Wikipedia, Wired, WordPress, Reddit, and Tubmlr. The original idea for both of these bills was to stop the illegal copying of movies or music, something that movie studios, music publishers, and other affected businesses believe is threatening their sales. OWC has released their new series of SSD hard drives (Mercury Enterprise Pro 6G SSD series), the new SSD drives are specifically designed to be used in servers, and productions studios. The drive will be available in a 50GB, 100GB, 200GB, 400GB sizes, and with speeds of up to 6gb/s write and 6Gb/s read, it is sure to help out with data access on a server. Microsoft is going to start automatically pushing updates to its Internet Explorer web browser. These automatic updates will be pushed out to all users running Windows XP or greater, and will happen to all users with automatic updates enabled. The goal of this is for Microsoft to make sure they provide the users of Internet Explorer with the best protections against malicious software such as malware while browsing the internet, as well as providing them a better browsing experience. However, if you do not want to move to the latest version of the browser, or do not want to be automatically updated to the latest version, turning off automatic updates is a way to opt out of this, or you can download the Internet Explorer Automatic Update Blocker toolkit.

Research in Motion is changing the name of the Blackberry OS, and will be renaming the next version of the popular OS. The new name for the next-generation platform for BlackBerry will be “BBX”, along with the name change the new OS apps will be able to work both on the BBX devices as well as the Blackberry Playbook devices. The new devices will not be able to run the current generation Blackberry applications, but will have the ability to run recompiled Android device applications (according to RIM). The implementation of the new OS is still about a year away, but we will be sure to stay up to date on this new technology and be ready to help implement these new devices into our customers environments.

You may have heard of SSD(Solid State Drives) and the benefits they offer in speed and reliability. So far the achilles heel of SSD’s have been the lack of storage space that they provide. Recently, multiple manufacturers have come to the table with a new Hard Drive product which combines the speed of SSD and the storage space of traditional platter based HDD’s. It is being marketed as a hybrid drive and utilizes a core Solid State Storage in conjunction with HDD to provide speed for commonly used programs off of the SSD portion, and the HDD portion for all other content. This combination has proved to be very economical and yet provide the essential benefits of SSD. These products are certainly something to consider when ordering high end servers or workstations.

RIM officially announced that the issues behind the BlackBerry outages have been corrected last Thursday and service has been up and running ever since. As a token of appreciation for the patience of RIM customers, BlackBerry owners will soon be able to download over $100 in selected applications. According to RIM, these Premium Apps will be available to download on BlackBerry App World ™ starting today through the end of 2011.

BlackBerry outages have now spread to North America. RIM users are currently being affected in various ways by this issue. There is no eta for a fully functional RIM at this point. BlackBerry users can expect to experience intermittent data issues in the meantime.

DFS (Distributed File System) – It allows you to have multiple copies of information while still retaining a single copy throughout multiple sites. This gives you fantastic speeds despite where you and the information may have originally been located. However Microsoft has one bug that they decided wasnt worth the time to fix. They do not call it a bug but a feature that was not deemed necessary. The issue is when one person across the country requires access to a file and another person on another server tries to open up that file, the system does not lock the file as you might notice happens when two people open up a file on a local file server. Well we have created a custom program that eliminates this issue and forces files locked when a file is open no matter where the location of the two people are in question.
